On Wednesday 25th May, Collaroy Tennis Club hosted a special event to officially launch our 100 Year Anniversary. Largely organised by our indefatigable Secretary, Fiona Bevan, a list of dignitaries was invited to attend the function, comprising official speeches, light refreshments, a brief tour of the complex and the unveiling of our Centenary Plaque by Mayor Michael Regan. The response was wonderful!
The Mayor quickly accepted, even though he knew he’d be on a family holiday at Caves Beach at the time and would have to drive from Newcastle to Sydney to attend. His acceptance was followed soon after by fellow dignitaries Melissa Achten (President of Tennis NSW), Darren Simpson (CEO of Tennis NSW), other Northern Beaches Council representatives including Ray Brownlee (CEO), Campbell Pfeiffer (Executive Manager, Property) and Trudi Seymour (Property Officer), as well as Collaroy T.C. Life members Mike Peters, Bob Silversides, Bob Paterson and Dave Taylor.

Fiona had done a great job setting up the room, with wonderful photos from the Club’s past enlarged, printed, framed and proudly displayed along an entire wall of the clubhouse. An unveiling stand, complete with curtains was arranged and a feast of healthy food prepared and presented.

Our Centenary President, Vito Cincinnato, welcomed the visitors and spoke proudly of the Club, stating at one stage: “As the level of participation increases, it brings more variety, fun, friendships, diversity and inclusiveness to our Club. Players are smiling and it really is just an exciting time to be part of Collaroy T.C., as we continue to create a base upon which to build our future over the next 100 years.”
Life Member and former President, Bob Silversides, also spoke. Along with his fellow committee members at the time, Bob was a driving force in developing the Club into what it has become today. He fondly recalled both the tough and the good times including financial struggles, battles with irate neighbours and the Land & Environment Council and how they were overcome.

President of Tennis NSW, Melissa Achten, presented the Club with a Centenary Award to mark the occasion and spoke glowingly, saying: “Collaroy won Tennis Club of the Year in 2021 because of the work they do in being sustainable, the way they work with both Tennis NSW and the local community and because they’ve made the Club a real community asset.”
Editor of the Northern Beaches Advocate, Dale Cohen, attended the event, took photos and later published a story for us.
All in all, it was a great way to officially launch our Centenary. We now look forward to events specifically for our members, notably the Centenary Dinner on 13 August and ‘Racquets at The Reef’ on 17 September. Stay tuned for full details.
