GRAND SLAM GRANDEUR

Never a club to let the opportunity for a party pass us by, club stalwarts Lynne and Ros decided we should celebrate the grandeur of the Grand Slam tournaments with events of our own. So they gathered together a team of helpers and on the afternoon of Saturday June 10, the Club turned bleu, blanc et rouge to celebrate the French Open. The Tricolore French Flag flew proudly from the court fences, members dressed in their best French stylings and we supped on baguettes and plateaux de fromage , while sipping the odd glass of vin.

There was some fantastique tennis played too, with sets allocated and partners swapping after four games (very French!). At the end of the day, prizes were allocated for most games won with Anna C. and Kim sharing the title in the Ladies category and Dave K. winning the men’s.

But the main prizes went to our best dressed on the day… the inimitable Val in blonde pigtails, long socks and French national colours and Warren scoring by simply painting a ‘feeelthy’ French pencil moustache on his upper lip. (Simple but effective Warren!) Thanks Ros and Lynne for a fun day as Roland Garros came to Collaroy.

WIMBLEDON WHITES

Then just 4 weeks later, on Saturday July 8, it was time to go all PIMM’s and Proper and celebrate the grandest Grand Slam of all… Wimbledon!

This time, the attire was, of course, all white and we were treated to an afternoon tea of scones with jam and cream, strawberries and cream and Pimm’s and Lemonade.

And as Carlos Alcaraz was beating Nicholas Jarry in the 3rd round on Centre Court at SW19 on his way to an unforgettable title, our own Garry, looking exceptional in all-white, was scoring consecutive wins to eventually take out the Most Games Won title in the Men’s category. Newly minted member Samantha  – herself a picture of near-virginal all-white elegance – won her first title at Collaroy in the Ladies category.

Again, special prizes were awarded to best dressed and it was the delightful Simone D. who wowed judges with her subtle grace and shimmering white lace, complete with a garland of Wimbledon petunias in her hair. Taking out the Men’s prize was Club Captain Wil with authentic Wimbledon accessories – both jacket and lanyard containing his official ground pass purchased AT Wimbledon.

Special mention went to ‘The Annas’ who added a blaze of colour to an all-white day with Anna G donning a Wimbledon green wig and Anna C her trademark electric blue wig (just for Glenn), in homage to Wimbledon’s always perfect blue sky weather (said tongue in cheek btw).

Another fabulous day at our Club and we still have one more Grand Slam to come! We look forward to gathering in September for the U.S. Open, where the dress code will be all red, white and blue and star-spangled banners. We’ll quaff down hot dogs while drinking Duff Beer and welcome a little bit of Queens, New York, to Collaroy. Stand by for confirmation of date.
